Sex, Love, and Marriage in Victorian America
February 18, 2023 7:00pm William Root House In conjunction with the Victorian Wedding exhibit, the William Root House will also host a special after-hours program called “Sex, Love, and Marriage in Victorian America” on Saturday, February 18th at 7pm. Participants will learn about the use of photography in spreading explicit images during the Civil War, popular contraception/birth control methods, and why we perceive Victorians as being sexually repressed and prudish today. This program is restricted to guests 18 years or older. By purchasing a ticket you acknowledge that you understand this program will include adult themes. Military Memoirs of a Confederate Line Officer
April 19, 2023 5:00pm William Root House Join editor Ron Cobb as he discusses his new book, The Military Memoirs of a Confederate Line Officer: Captain John C. Reed’s Civil War from Manassas to Appomattox. This is a first-hand account of General Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia from the perspective of a line officer in the 8th Georgia Infantry. Captain Reed, a graduate of Princeton University and classically educated aristocrat, kept careful contemporaneous notes of his experiences in camp and on the battlefield. Space is limited. Death, Crime, and the Coroner
October 20, 2023 6:30pm William Root House Hannah and William Root's eldest son, Willie Root, served as Cobb County coroner from 1883 to 1887. This lecture will explore Willie's curious relationship with death: serving in gruesome Civil War field hospitals, experiencing personal loss within his family, and witnessing tragic crime scenes as coroner. The lecture will conclude with a tour of the William Root House. |
Architecture of the Last Colony Lecture and Book Signing
November 15, 2023 7:00pm William Root House Join us in celebrating the highly anticipated release of the Georgia Trust’s new book, Architecture of the Last Colony. Editor and retired Georgia Trust President and CEO Mark C. McDonald will share about some of Georgia’s most significant and best preserved historic buildings. Tickets are $10 per person. Space is limited. Architecture of the Last Colony is richly illustrated with full-color, large-format photographs along with descriptions. The book tells the story of how Georgia’s built environment reflects its growth from 1733 to the present. Copies of the book will be available for purchase for $50 each and a book signing will follow the lecture. |
