Letter from the Chair REGARDING Acworth's Historic Homes and Parking Lot Construction

Cobb Landmarks has recently learned of the City of Acworth’s purchase of several downtown parcels, which include two 1850s homes—one of which is highlighted in the city’s own historic walking tour. We understand the primary motivation behind the acquisition is to expand downtown parking.

Following recent discussions with concerned Acworth residents and stakeholders, Cobb Landmarks notes widespread public support for preserving these historic homes. Despite conflicting statements from city officials regarding demolition, relocation, or preservation, the ultimate decision lies with Acworth’s leadership.

Cobb Landmarks firmly believes that parking needs and historic preservation are not mutually exclusive. These homes offer significant potential for adaptive reuse—whether as retail, restaurant, office space, or continued residential use—maintaining character and adding economic value to downtown Acworth. We strongly encourage the City to consider subdividing the parcels containing the homes and placing them on the market for private buyers who will agree to restore them according to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards. Additionally, designating these properties as local landmarks would ensure their protection in perpetuity.

Cobb Landmarks has formally offered to consult with and assist the City of Acworth throughout the planning and development process to find a solution that accommodates parking needs while safeguarding Acworth's heritage.
