The Wallis House was built about 1853 by Josiah Wallis, who came to Cobb County around 1850, purchased 400 acres, and built this farmhouse for his residence. The Wallis family left the area for their native Newton County in 1864 during the Civil War when they realized their plantation was in direct line of General Sherman’s advance from Paulding County. The house was used as union headquarters by General O. O. Howard during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain in June 1864, and was also used as a Confederate hospital. General Sherman was at the Wallis House during the battle at Kolb Farm and heard the cannon fire from four miles away, only to learn later what had occurred. The house remained in the hands of descendants of the wartime owners until December 2003. At that time, with cooperation from the Georgia Civil War Commission and Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, Cobb County purchased the Wallis House. Cobb County plans to hold the property until the U. S. Congress authorizes the National Park Service to accept the property as an addition to the Kennesaw Mountain Park. When funds become available, the Park Service will restore the house and interpret the site.
CLHS is assisting in transferring information from one NPS service group to the other along with staying in the loop with Cobb County and Federal Government legislative contacts and NPS stake holders. Cobb Landmarks and Cobb County’s Historic Preservation Commission partnered with Georgia State University’s Heritage Preservation Program, whose graduate students provided a conditions assessment report on the property including recommendations for short term maintenance. Cobb Landmarks will continue to monitor the federal acquisition and local support as needed.
