The Cheney-Newcomer House stands on Powder Springs Road six miles west of Marietta at the crossing of the Tennessee Wagon and Old Sandtown Roads. The Greek revival plantation house was built about 1856 by Andrew Jackson Cheney, previously of Madison. Prominent features of the antebellum structure are four fluted Doric columns, a two-story portico, a trabeated transom and sidelights framing the entrance, and a full raised masonry “basement” or first level and wood-framed upper floor.
During the Civil War, Union Major General John M. Schofield established headquarters in the Cheney House in late June 1864. At least one Union Army division camped on the site and General W. T. Sherman inspected the right wing of the Kennesaw line at the Cheney Place during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain in June 1864.
After Cheney’s death in 1886, the property was leased to tenants and fell into disrepair. In 1953, the property was sold to Kenneth Newcomer who resided there until his death in 1999. Ambling Development Partners purchased chased the property and built an assisted-living facility on the property grounds. As part of zoning stipulations approved by the Cobb Board of Commissioners in 2002, the developer stabilized the property, and then donated the property to Cobb Preservation Foundation.
Cobb Preservation Foundation (CPF) owns the house and grounds and is seeking a buyer for the property. Cobb Landmarks is working to assist CPF in determining future uses for the property, seeking a buyer for the property; and other actions as needed. Cobb Landmarks has nominated the Cheney-Newcomer House to the Georgia Trust's 2010 Places in Peril list. If chosen for the list, technical resources will be made available by the Trust to assist with assessing feasibility options for the property.
