During the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain in 1864, defensive trenches were dug around the Mountain in hopes of preventing the advance of the Union Army. Originally nearly 25 miles of wartime entrenchments were constructed by Confederate and also Union Armies between Lost Mountain and Bushy Mountain. Portions of these Civil War period earthworks remain intact today and tell the story of the military life in Cobb County at that time. One set of exceptionally intact trenches remains off Cobb Parkway on privately-owned property. Their location makes their preservation viable and has the potential to become a community park, and would allow visitors to envision the conditions that existed in Cobb County during the Civil War in 1864.
Cobb Landmarks is working to contact the multiple property owners and all stakeholders to explore options for conservation of the trenches. Possible options include donation of the property to the county for a community pocket park.
