For more than thirty years, Cobb Landmarks and Historical Society has promoted the preservation of historic structures significant to Cobb County’s rich heritage. Through thoughtful leadership, advocacy and public education, Cobb Landmarks ensures that the region’s culturally relevant buildings and sites continue to enhance the county’s quality of life, economy, and tourism.
Cobb Landmarks and Historical Society has succeeded in preserving and protecting some of Georgia’s historically relevant buildings through the generosity of dedicated supporters—people who care deeply about local history. These contributions allow Cobb Landmarks to sustain programs and develop initiatives that address the needs of Cobb County’s historic landmarks. Currently, volunteer leaders are developing a strategic plan that will guide the organization in creating relevant programs, managing financial resources and increasing awareness of local heritage.
Each year, Cobb Landmarks provides engaging programs and activities that reach thousands of preservationists, tourists, teachers, college students, and school-age children. Many of these programs are centered on the organization’s two historic properties, the Root House Museum and the Power Cabin. Highlights of heritage education programs include:
- In 2008, the Root House Museum (circa 1845) served more than 3,800 visitors from 27 Georgia cities, 39 states, and 16 foreign countries. 1,900 elementary school, middle school, high school, and college students, along with 250 teachers from 22 schools came to the Root House on school field experiences. This simple frame house is more typical of its time and place than the grand mansions often displayed.
- The Power Cabin (circa 1845) is made available to visitors several times a year. One of the few remaining log houses in Cobb County, the cabin was rehabilitated in 2001 and offers its visitors a look into rural frontier life.
- Throughout the year, public and private events are held, raising awareness and funds, while highlighting the lifestyles, livelihoods, and entertainments of Cobb’s communities throughout its history.
